The concept of the metaverse is rapidly gaining momentum. Bowing to the increased public interest, Snapchat has released a new Avatar lens AR filter that makes you look like a Sims character or – to use a word of the day – allows you to find out what your metaverse appearance is.
How does the new Avatar filter work?
The Avatar filter is the newest addition to Snapchat’s ever-expanding portfolio of filters that use augmented reality technology. Unlike earlier AR-powered lenses, the new Avatar filter not only removes any minor skin imperfections, improves the shape of your lips, and manicures your eyebrows but also changes your clothes. The only thing that will stay the same is the background – for now, that is.
To try out the new lens, Snapchat users must scan the QR code on the Snapchat website – the Avatar lens page – using their built-in smartphone cameras, after which they can enjoy the glamorous, acne-free image of themselves in the metaverse. Based on what we have seen before, the novelty is likely to go viral within seconds and create quite a splash among TikTok users.
How is Snap handling the metaverse?
Snapchat is confident that AR tools are better fitted to meet the challenges of building the metaverse. For that reason, the company has been investing heavily in developing AR smartphone experiences of increasing complexity and detalization. What we see with the new Avatar filter is not yet something we are willing to associate ourselves with – too sleek, too lacking in the realism department – but beneath that, it is a huge step towards the future where our avatars will look more personalized and relatable.
