It looks like Google might be jumping on the AirTag bandwagon. As Apple’s AirTag tracker has gained momentum in recent years, rumors have been circulating that Google could be developing its own version. And now, there is evidence to suggest that Google could be planning to launch its own tracker in the near future.
For those unfamiliar with AirTag, it is a Bluetooth-enabled tracking device used to locate lost items. It is small and comes with a button-cell battery that can last up to a year. It can be attached to keychains, wallets, and other items, and it will track and send notifications when it is out of a certain range.
The reason Google is being rumored to be developing its own AirTag-like tracker is due to a recent teardown of the Google Home app. This teardown revealed code that hints at a tracking device that is similar to Apple’s AirTag. The code is titled “Nearby Device Setup,” and it could be related to the functionality of a tracking device.
In addition to the evidence found in the Google Home app, there is also the fact that Google recently acquired the startup, UnaBiz. UnaBiz specializes in low-powered networks and Internet of Things (IoT) products. This acquisition could potentially suggest that Google is planning to use UnaBiz’s technology to develop its own tracking device.
At this point, this is all speculation, and Google has not made any official announcements. But with all the evidence that has been gathered, it looks like Google could be working on its own AirTag-like tracker. If this is the case, then we can expect to see the device launch in the near future.
